How to Plan the Perfect Surprise Proposal on Catalina Island: Part 2
Planning a proposal is no small feat, especially when you’re aiming for it to be as picture-perfect as your love story. While we’ve covered tips like reaching out to your photographer early, timing your proposal just right, and getting creative with the surprise, there are still a few details that can take your proposal to the next level.
In this part two of my Catalina Island proposal guide, I’ll share bonus tips to help you prepare for flawless photos and a stress-free moment.
Read Part 1 here: How To Plan The Perfect Surprise Proposal On Catalina Island
1. Subtle Preparation for Picture-Perfect Moments
If your partner loves capturing picture-perfect moments (and let’s face it, most of us do!), a little extra thoughtfulness can go a long way. You don’t want them feeling caught off guard in a way that might make them self-conscious about the photos afterward.
Here’s how you can help:
Drop Subtle Hints: Without spoiling the surprise, suggest dressing up for what they think is a special outing, such as a romantic dinner or a nice walk around the botanical gardens. This ensures they feel confident and camera-ready.
Coordinate Your Look: Plan your outfit to match their style or the setting. For example, neutral tones or pastel shades look great against Catalina’s natural landscapes.
By putting in a little extra effort, you’ll not only complement your partner but also elevate the overall aesthetic of your photos.
2. Plan for Hands-Free Proposals
One of the most common (and easily avoidable) distractions during proposals is having items like a phone, purse, or even a coffee cup in hand. While it might feel natural to carry these things, they can unintentionally take away from the magic of the moment in your photos.
Before the proposal, try to gently guide your partner to set their belongings aside or hand them to a friend. This way, they can focus fully on the moment, and you’ll have cleaner, timeless images that capture the emotion without any distractions.
3. Bring Backup Essentials
Sometimes, the best photos come after a bit of freshening up. If your partner loves being photo-ready, consider enlisting the help of a trusted friend or family member to carry a few essentials like:
A quick change of clothes for the post-proposal session.
Makeup for touch-ups or a brush for hair.
A pair of comfortable shoes for exploring different photo spots on the island.
Even if they don’t end up using these items, it’s always better to have them just in case!
4. Capture the Moment in Video
While I’ll be there capturing stunning still photos of your proposal, having a video adds another layer of storytelling to your special day. If you have a trusted friend or family member who can discreetly record the moment, go for it.
However, if you’d prefer a professional touch, I can also record a video for you while taking photos. This way, you’ll have both high-quality images and a keepsake video to relive your proposal over and over again. (Just let me know ahead of time so I can plan accordingly!)
A Romantic Finale at Mt. Ada
To top off this magical day, we ended the session at Mt. Ada, one of the most romantic and breathtaking spots on Catalina Island. Perched above Avalon, Mt. Ada offers sweeping views of the entire town, the harbor, and the vast ocean beyond.
During the holiday season, the venue is decorated in the most enchanting way, with twinkling lights and festive touches that make it feel like you’ve stepped onto a Hallmark movie set. Its historic charm, elegant decor, and warm ambiance create the perfect backdrop for intimate photos that celebrate your love story.
The kind and welcoming staff made the experience even more memorable, and the food? Absolutely delicious. Whether you’re sharing a celebratory toast or simply soaking in the moment, Mt. Ada adds a layer of timeless romance to your proposal.
If you’re looking for a setting that exudes charm and elegance, Mt. Ada is a must for your Catalina Island proposal session.
