Planning an engagement session at the Wrigley Memorial in Catalina Island can be a truly magical experience. The island’s serene beauty, combined with the architectural marvel of the Wrigley Memorial and the lush botanical gardens, creates a perfect backdrop for capturing your love story. However, to ensure your session goes smoothly, proper planning is essential. Here are some comprehensive tips to help you prepare for an unforgettable engagement session at this picturesque location.
1. Getting to the Island on Time with the Catalina Express
The first step in planning your engagement session at the Wrigley Memorial is ensuring you arrive on the island on time. Here are five helpful tips for taking the Catalina Express in the morning:
a. Book Your Tickets in Advance
Catalina Express operates ferries from several locations including Long Beach, San Pedro, Newport Beach, and Dana Point. To avoid any last-minute stress, book your tickets well in advance. Morning ferries can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons, so securing your spot early is crucial.
b. Arrive Early at the Ferry Terminal
To ensure a smooth start to your journey, arrive at the ferry terminal at least an hour before your scheduled departure. This gives you ample time to find parking, check in, and board the ferry without rushing.
c. Pack Light
While it's tempting to bring a lot of props and outfits for your engagement session, remember that you’ll need to carry everything with you on the ferry. Pack only what’s necessary and make sure your bags are easy to carry.
d. Check the Weather
Catalina Island’s weather can be quite different from the mainland. Check the weather forecast for Avalon, where the ferry will dock, and dress accordingly. Layers are always a good idea, as the weather can change throughout the day.
e. Prepare for Motion Sickness
If you or your partner are prone to motion sickness, consider taking medication before your ferry ride. The waters can sometimes be choppy, and you don’t want to start your day feeling unwell.
2. Timing Your Session with Sunset and Park Closures
Timing is crucial for your engagement session, especially when working with natural light and park hours. Here’s how to make the most of your time at the Wrigley Memorial:
a. Check Sunset Times
If you’re planning a sunset session, it’s essential to check the local sunset times. Remember that the sun will set behind the tall mountains at the back of the Wrigley Memorial, so plan to arrive well before the official sunset time to capture the best light.
b. Morning Sessions During May Gray and June Gloom
For a soft and ethereal look, consider scheduling your session during the morning hours of May Gray or June Gloom. The overcast skies during these months create a perfect diffused light, ideal for photography. However, since the botanical garden opens early, you might need to take the ferry the night before and stay overnight on the island.
c. Be Aware of Park Hours
The Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Garden have specific opening and closing hours. Make sure to check these times ahead of your visit and plan your session accordingly. The park typically closes in the early evening, so a sunset session means you’ll need to wrap up and exit the park before it closes.
3. Practical Tips for a Smooth Session
Here are some practical tips to ensure your engagement session goes off without a hitch:
a. Wear Comfortable Shoes
The Wrigley Memorial is located on a hill, and there’s a bit of a walk to reach it. Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain. You can always bring your dressier shoes to change into once you reach the top.
b. Plan Your Transportation
Cell reception on Catalina Island can be spotty, so it’s essential to plan your transportation in advance. Renting a golf cart is a popular option for getting around the island. Alternatively, you can arrange a ride with a local taxi service or use the island’s shuttle service. Make sure you have a way to get back down after your session, as walking back can be tiring, especially after a long day.
4. Highlights of the Wrigley Memorial for Your Engagement Session
The Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Garden offer a unique and stunning backdrop for your engagement photos. Here are some highlights:
a. Rarely Crowded
One of the best things about the Wrigley Memorial is that it’s rarely crowded. This means you can enjoy a more private and intimate session without the hassle of waiting for people to clear out of your shots.
b. Beautiful Architecture and Gardens
The Wrigley Memorial itself is an architectural marvel, featuring stunning stonework and tile mosaics. The surrounding botanical garden is home to a variety of tropical plants and a charming cactus garden, providing diverse and beautiful settings for your photos.
c. Typical California Landscape
